This was taken about 45 minutes after sunset, and walking along the cliff path which runs alongside the beach I could hardly see where I was walking, but I stopped to make this image as I was taken by the ripples in the sand. The excellent low light capabilities of the digital camera has allowed me to make an image which I was very pleased with. Although looking out on the scene I could not see a great deal except for the ripples, the camera has revealed a whole different scene. Hope you like it.

Texture - Porthcothan Beach, Near Padstow, North Cornwall

This unusual texture was found on Porthcothan Beach and illustrates one of the great advantages of digital photography. I made his image about 20 minutes after the sun had dipped below the horizon and the area of this rock face was in quite deep shadow, but the camera was able to pick out all the textures. It has also given the image a cyan cast which I like. But what is it? It’s a cliff rock face that was covered with a slimy weed. Amazing what you can find on the beach !

This is Porthcothan on the North Cornwall coast which is a little north of Bedruthan Steps. I remember this evening shoot particularly as there was a bitterly cold breeze coming off the sea. It was getting towards sunset and because of the haze colour was permeating the sky to my left and reflecting off the wet sand in the foreground. There are some substantial stacks similar to those at Bedruthan Steps dotted around the beach including one known as Wills Rock which you can see in the distance adjacent to the headland. Porthcothan is a great family beach and with Easter nearly upon us one to put on your list for places to visit this coming weekend.

Pothcothan Bay is situated about midway between Bedruthan Steps and St Merryn on the B3276. There is a good sized car park together with the usual beach facilities. The bay faces approximately WNW and so the best time to get a good sunset shot is from May to July. This image was taken in March so the setting sun is not in evidence, but the colours reflected in the sky make up for it. The image was taken on the coastal path which leads out from the head of the beach and will eventually take you to Park Head. The low evening sun has caught the headland beautifully and I love the gorgeous oranges, pinks and yellows in the sky. I must remember to make a note on the calendar to catch a midsummer sunset at this location.
