Latest Photos - Minions to Sharp Tor, S.E. Cornwall

These latest photos come from a recent visit to the moorland village of Minions, which is about 5 miles north of Liskeard on the southern edge of Bodmin Moor. This area was once a thriving mining community during the 19th century, when copper and other minerals were found in Caradon Hill. Numerous shafts were opened, engines houses built and the railway was extended from Liskeard to facilitate the removal of the ore to Looe for onward transport to markets. To get an idea of the level of mining activity here you should make a visit to The Caradon Mining Heritage Centre in the renovated engine house to the east of Minions, where you can see some old photographs of the area during its heyday.

To get to Minions travel north from Liskeard and take the Pensilva and Upton Cross Road for about 5 miles. In the centre of Upton Cross turn left at the crossroads towards Minions. As you enter the village you will see a public car park (free) on your right. After parking here exit via the car park entrance and turn immediately left signposted Henwood. After about 200 yards look out for a grass track on your left. Take this track which is the old trackbed of The Caradon Railway. After a short walk you will start to see the remains of the granite sleepers poking through the grassy path. Folowing this track has one advantage in that it is level all the way to Sharp Tor. Sharp Tor is a granite promentary to the north of the Cheesewring. There are some superb open views of the village of Henwood and the country beyond as far as the edge of Dartmoor in Devon. When you get to the end of the track cross the farm road and take the public access path towards Sharp Tor. If you are feeling adventurous you can climb to the top of the Tor from here, but it was getting late so I decided to call it a day and turned back for Minions. One word of advice I would like to give is that you should wear wellingtons or waterproof boots as the track was very muddy in places.
