The Magic of Cornwall and Accessibility
Access Keys
For those unable to use a mouse to click on links I have provided a set of Access Keys in order for you to go directly to a particular section. Most modern browsers are able to make use of these.
Windows Internet Explorer users
In Windows Internet Explorer press (and hold) the 'ALT' key with the access key you want, then press ENTER. For example, for the home page press 'ALT' and '1' then ENTER.
Apple Mac users
Use the 'CTRL' key with the access key.
Firefox
For version 1.0 to 1.5, press (and hold) the 'ALT' key with the access key you want. For version 2.0 press ALT-SHIFT+Access Key.
Most other browsers will take you straight to the page with no need to press ENTER after the key combination.
Note with Firefox 2.0 you may also have to turn off 'Search for Text when I Start Typing' in the Tools > Options > Advanced > General tab. It may not work on your machine if you use the numerical keypad, if so use the numbers on the QWERTY part of your keyboard.
The relevant Access Keys are as follows:
| Access Key | Target |
|---|---|
| 1 | Home page |
| 4 | Search |
| 3 | Site Map |
| 9 | Contact |
| 0 (Zero) | Access key details |
| S | Skip navigation |
Validation
All pages validate as XHTML 1 Transitional. A badge has been placed in the footer and clicking on it will take you to the W3C Validation service. In addition all CSS files have been validated for compliance. If you find any pages that fail validation please let me know. Please use the Contact form.
Standards Compliance
I believe I have designed the pages of this website semantically, in line with current Web Standards practice. In other words the HTML markup is separated from the design, so pages contain the content and style is applied through a CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) file.
If you have turned off CSS styles in your browser the page should still be readable. Unfortunately I have no way of knowing what the site looks like in certain browsers, mobile devices, or screen readers, so any feedback you can give me would be appreciated. My aim is to provide a pleasant browsing experience, with the minimum of hassle for the visitor.
Links
Links to pages within the website or to other websites are coloured blue, but mostly without underlining. This applies to links within the content of the page, but not to the top menu bars. I believe most people are familiar with a top menu bar and will recognise it as a series of links. Passing the mouse over the link will turn it white with an underline, then returning to blue. Clicking on a link will take you to another page in the website or an external website, but without opening a new window. To get back to the original page use the back button in your browser.
Non-mouse users can TAB through the links. When a new page loads TAB to the 'Skip to Content' menu item, Press RETURN to go straight to the content of the page and cycle through the links from there.
Resizing
Some visitors may have difficulty viewing text at the 'Normal' setting set by your browser. You can change the text in Internet Explorer by going to the browser menu bar and clicking on View >Text Size > choose. In Firefox use CTRL and '+' to enlarge or CTRL and '-' to make smaller. The containers for the text will also enlarge, but images will remain the same size.
This video will give you a visual guide to resizing the text in your browser.
Summary
Thats about it, but if you have any Feedback on the question of accessibility on this site, please get in touch. I would be pleased to respond to any difficulty you find using this site, where it is within my power and capabilities to do so.
