Duckpool, Near Bude, North Cornwall

Wednesday 23rd May 2007 - Week 21
This weeks photos come from a visit this weekend to Duckpool, a small cove just north of Bude. If you are familiar with this area you will have seen the satellite dishes at Coombe, well Duckpool as situated a mile or so to the south. There is a free car park adjacent to the beach, but very few other facilities. The top of the beach is covered with rounded boulders and the sand is only revealed at low tide. I arrived in the mid afternoon just as the tide was turning and my plan was to walk the cliffpath to Stanbury Mouth about 2 miles to the north. I started walking up what I thought was the cliffpath at Steeple Point, but as the path became narrower I started to have my doubts ! At the top the path is about 4 feet wide with a vertical drop on the seaward side of about 100 feet. Luckily I discovered an alternative route on the way back, so my recommended route would be to walk back up the road from the car park about 200 yards and you will see a stile on the left and a sign for the coastal path. At the top you emerge at Steeple Point, and here you really should turn left and walk towards the headland as you will find a bench which I believe has one of the finest views in Cornwall. Walking towards Stanbury Mouth there are a couple of inclines, but nothing too onerous until you get to the descent down into Stanbury Mouth which is seriously steep. All in all an interesting day capped with beautiful weather. See you next week.
