Daymer Bay, Near Pozeath, North Cornwall

This week's photos come from a visit this Whitsun Weekend to Daymer Bay on The Camel Estuary, Near Polzeath. It was a blustery day with a cold northerly wind which was blowing right up the estuary. Ideal sailing conditions and indeed a lot of people had taken to the water to wind or kite surf. Particularly fascinating to watch were the kite surfers who speed along the water holding aloft a huge kite from two guide wires. The tide was coming in when I arrived so there was plenty of water available, but still a lot of sand so holidaymakers were making the most of the weather, although mostly behind their windbreakers. One of the reasons I wanted to go to Daymer Bay was to climb to the top of Brea Hill, a large rounded hillock, as I had been told of the glorious view from the top The first and third pictures were all taken from the hill and I think give you an idea of the vista you can expect. Access to the hill is by quite a steep incline, but it is well worth the effort. Less able walkers can take the level walk to Polzeath, or for the slightly more energetic the 1¼ mile walk to Rock. A must see at Daymer Bay is St Enodoc Church where you will find the gravestone of Sir John Betjeman, the church itself is fascinating, not least for its unique location in the middle of St Enodoc Golf Course, but also for its twisted spire. This area, comprising Trebetherick, Daymer Bay and Rock is one of the most exclusive (meaning expensive) residential areas in Cornwall, but for the price of a parking space you can enjoy all the facilities.
