Bude, Widemouth Bay and Bude Canal (Part 1)
This week's photos are from a circular walk I took from Bude to Widemouth Bay, then across-country to Helebridge and the Bude Canal and back into Bude along the canal. This walk is about 5 miles and I would describe it as a moderate walk, with not too many inclines and easily undertaken by the moderately fit. I started the walk from Bude, parking in the Shoppers Car Park near Bude Haven Beach alongside the Bude Canal. Walking towards the seafront you pass the Canal sealock, further on you will come to the breakwater from where you can join the coastal path towards Widemouth Bay. The first feature you will see on the coastalpath is the octagonal lookout at Compass Point. A little further on you will arrive at Efford Beacon from where you will have a fabulous view over Bude Bay to the north as far as Lundy Island (on a clear day). To the south the view extends as far as Tintagel Head. About three miles from Bude you will come to Widemouth Bay, where incidentally there is a free car park from which you could start this walk. Next week I will continue this walk to Helebridge and the Bude Canal.
