A Walk Around Gorran Haven and Dodman Point, Near St Austell, Mid Cornwall

This week's photos are from a walk I took this weekend from Gorran Haven, Near St Austell along the coast to Dodman Point and returning overland, a distance of about 4 miles. To get to Gorran Haven take the Mevagissey Road from St Austell, turning right after about 6 miles at the signpost for Gorran Haven and Gorran. You will pass on The Lost Gardens of Heligan on this road and after about 3 miles you will see a turning on the left for Gorran and Gorran Haven. You will pass through Gorran Churchtown then Gorran to arrive at the bottom of the hill at Gorran Haven. Park the car park on the left in the village. I started my walk along the coastpath to Dodman Point from just above the beach, after about half a mile you will descend to Vault Beach, a beautiful sandy beach, which even at this time of year did not appear to be overcrowded, though probably because there ae no facilities and the only approach is by foot. The dominating headland of Dodman Point can be seen off to the south. Follow the coast path all the way to Dodman Point where you will see a cross erected in the 19th century on the headland. This part of the headland is a natural strongpoint and has a massive man-made earthwork with a defensive ditch in front, made by Iron-Age settlers. This is a fine spot for a picnic as there are spectacular views over the coastline and Veryan Bay. You can retrace your steps to get back to your car, or you could do as I did and head inland towards Treveague Farm and Gorran. You should consult an Ordinance Survey map or get a copy of Classic Cornish Walks Volume 1 for a detailed description of the route. Another fabulous day with spendid views, pleasant weather and some memorable photos. See you next week when I hope the weather will have been a little better.
